What is the Academic Senate?
Within the limits established by the Illinois legislative statute, the Board of Higher Education, and the Board of Trustees, the Academic Senate is the primary governing body to recommend the educational policy of the University and to advise the President on its implementation and provides for faculty, staff and student participation in academic governance.

Membership Composition                            
The voting membership is composed of twenty-nine tenure/tenure-track faculty members, one non-tenure track faculty member, one Faculty Associate, twenty student members from  the Student Government Association, the Student Body President, a representative of the Administrative Professional Council and a representative of the Civil Service Council. The  ex-officio, non-voting membership consists of the President of the University, Vice President and Provost, Vice President for  Finance and Planning, Vice President  of Student Affairs, Associative Vice President of Graduate Studies, Research and International Studies, a representative  of the Deans' Council,  a representative of the Chairpersons' Council and the Student  Trustee.

Faculty members serve staggered three-year terms; student members serve one-year terms. The officers of the Academic  Senate are the Chairperson, Vice Chairperson, and Secretary.

The Chairperson and Secretary must be faculty members; while the Vice Chairperson is the Student Body President.
