Clinical Nurse
Leader (CNL) Sequence
(22 semester hours plus 12 hours core)
Graduates
are prepared to function as leaders within complex health care environments. The
practice of the CNL emphasizes nursing leadership, client outcomes management,
and care environment management. The CNL is prepared as a generalist and
functions at the microsystem level as provider and manager of care at the point
of care delivery. Design, implementation, and evaluation of research based
care; coordination, delegation, and supervision of care provided by the health
care team are essential functions of the role.
In addition to the 12 hour core, there are 9 hours of support
courses and 13 hours of specialty courses for the Clinical Nurse Leader Sequence.
The support courses are NUR 431, 437, and 479. The specialty courses are NUR
432, 491, and 492.

and Post-Baccalaureate and Post-Master’s certificates,
submit an electronic version (MS Word format). These proposals are routed
by GCC to the Academic Senate. The Senate requires
electronic submission of all materials for posting to the Senate Web site.
REQUEST FOR APPROVAL OF A SUBDIVISION (SEQUENCE) OF A DEGREE
“The CNL is a leader in the health care
delivery system across all settings in which health care is delivered. The CNL
functions within a microsystem and assumes accountability for healthcare
outcomes for a specific group of clients within a unit or setting through the
assimilation and application of research-based information to design,
implement, and evaluate client plans of care. The CNL is a provider and a
manager of care at the point of care to individuals and cohorts. The CNL
designs, implements, and evaluates client care by coordinating, delegating and
supervising the care provided by the health care team, including licensed
nurses, technicians, and other health professionals” (American Association of
Colleges of Nursing, 2004).

The Clinical Nurse Leader registered nurse would not duplicate the role of the current bedside registered nurse or advanced practice nurse, but rather provide a new type of care provider with additional skills and research knowledge to impact patient safety, outcomes and the structure and processes within the health care system. The CNL provides evidence-based patient care, continuity of care, and optimizes existing staff’s ability to provide high quality care in a cost efficient manner.

No new resources are
requested nor will reallocation from other departments occur. The courses for
the CNL are at the Master’s level and 21 hours of the 34 hours curricular hours
are currently being offered in the graduate program. The CNL sequence will
encourage more efficient use of resources because it will generate greater
enrollment in the master’s program existing core and support courses.
