Dress Code - Marketing Department: Student Feedback Gathered by SGA Senator Mari Ruscitti

Pending

NA

The requirement of a dress code was first discussed by the Executive Committee on 10/1/07. However, 2007-08 Student Body President Dave Horstein asked that the item be temporarily tabled until the negotiations between SGA and the Marketing Department Chairperson, Dr. Longfellow, were concluded. Negotiations were not successful by the end of the 2007-08 school year. Therefore, on 4/28/08, Student Body President for 2008-09, Ted Mason, asked the Executive Committee to refer the matter to the Academic Affairs Committee to “explore the merit of the dress code and the necessity and validity it has to the educational enhancement of the University.”

At the beginning of the fall semester, student leaders felt that the issue of a dress code may no longer be a concern since there were fewer complaints heard from students. On 8/18/08, the Executive Committee asked SGA to investigate further before asking the Executive Committee to remove the item from its agenda. On 9/3/08, Student Senator Mari Ruscitti reported that the majority of students in the Marketing Department were in favor of a dress code. However, the issue of the cost of professional dress was still one of the major complaints.

On 9/3/08, the Executive Committee recommended that the issue be referred to the Academic Affairs Committee to further investigate the ramifications of the imposition of a professional dress code for Marketing Department students. Students are required to dress in business attire each day they are in attendance in a Marketing Department class. At total of not more than 10% may be deducted from a student’s grade for not adhering to the professional dress code. This, of course, could be a determining factor in whether or not a student is able to successfully pass a Marketing Department course.

Advisors Assessment Committee Formation Recommendation

Pending

NA

Student Body President Ted Mason proposed the formation of a committee to assess the performance of academic advisors. He reported to the Executive Committee on 9/3/08 the feedback he had received from students about advisors placing students in unnecessary classes and thus delaying graduation, as well as other inaccuracies. The Executive Committee suggested that there may already be a committee which assesses the academic advisors. Such a committee, if already in operation, would be under the auspices of Jonathan Rosenthal/Enrollment Management and Academic Services. Senator Mason asks for the Academic Affairs Committee to provide the Senate with a report from the committee and asks that J. Rosenthal or a member of the committee provide a presentation to the full Senate.
